In nature, radiation from
the sun and the effects of weather slowly break down any exposed
wood surface. As a result of this breakdown, the logs of older homes
begin to darken and lose their original luster.
To renew the original beauty of the logs, the
damaged outer surface must be cleaned away. This can be accomplished
with blonding agents or by cornblasting the logs.

Cornblasting
Cornblasting is similar to sandblasting, but
has several advantages. For example, cornblasting medium is
biodegradable and much gentler on the logs than sandblasting, which
tends to pit and highlight the wood grain. The end result is a
lighter wood surface, brightening your home’s overall appearance.
Pressure Washing
When it is time to apply a new coat of sealer to a log
home, it is often only necessary to pressure wash the exterior of
the home to remove dirt and the old broken down sealer.
In some cases where the entire sealer coat must be removed, chemical
stripping may be the best option.
Finish Application
When a tree falls in the forest, nature
immediately goes to work right away returning it to the soil and
within a few years there is no sign that it ever existed. The same
elements that return trees to the soil are also at work on your log
home, because nature can’t tell the difference between a log in the
forest and a log in your home. One of the best ways to keep the
destructive forces of nature away from you home is to apply a sealer
to your logs.
At Prolog Restorations, we only use stains and
sealers that are designed specifically for logs homes. It is
important to use log home specific products because logs, much more
than other wood products, swell and shrink in response to changes in
their environment. These sealers are available in a wide range of
color options, and our material application technicians are
manufacturer certified by Sashco and Perma-Chink.
Take a proactive approach in preventing future
rot and deterioration problems in your log home; let Prolog
Restorations apply a borate treatment to the exterior of your home.
Borate treatments defend against rot, and most types of
wood-destroying insects and fungi, without affecting the appearance
or fragrance of the wood.
